Blueberry Lavender Gin Smash Cocktail

Morning, everyone! June is here and by my calendar that means we are officially in summer (am I the only one who divides the year equally into groups of 3 months?). And the start of summer also means the start of cocktail season. That’s right, pour yourself a Gin & Tonic, toss that bottle of rosé into the freezer, and invite your friends over for drinks on the lanai.

And I’m going to kick off the season with a new cocktail for you: The Blueberry Lavender Smash Cocktail. This cocktail recipe is easy to make, delicious to drink, and perfect for warm weather parties.

What is a Smash Cocktail?

A smash cocktail is exactly that: a smash of ingredients with alcohol added. Gone are the days of painstakingly muddling 2 ounces of this and 4 ounces of that together. Welcome to 2022 where we simply smash everything together, toss in a shot of gin and raise a glass. I’m usually all for tradition, but sometimes it’s nice just to get on with things.

Where do you get dried lavender from?!?

Back story on lavender: Lavender is actually part of the mint family! Who knew? Originally from the Mediterranean it now grows all over the world. It’s relatively easy to grow once started but it’s notoriously difficult to grow from seed, so if you want to go the truly authentic route I suggest you buy a plant from your local nursery that’s already been started for you. It will live for a generation, and — if properly cared for — will give you glorious flowers each spring.

Ok, real talk: While you can grow and dry your own lavender, you can also source dried lavender from several places online. Even an Amazon search will return results. Once lavender flowers are dry they will keep for a really, really, long time. I keep mine in a mason jar in the kitchen cupboards.

How to make my Blueberry Lavender Gin Smash

This is really straightforward, so get ready.

  1. Put a small handful of blueberries into a glass. Technically I suppose this is about a tablespoon of blueberries but you can eyeball it. Really love that flavor? Add more. This isn’t rocket-science, this is making a drink that you’re going to enjoy.
  2. Add a pinch of dried lavender. And I do mean a pinch! That flavor is delicious but it is strong and it can easily overpower everything else you’re going to put into your glass. So keep it light to begin with. You can always add more later, but you can’t take it out once its in.
  3. Take a pestle, or a spoon, or anything that will successfully smash these two ingredients together and, well, smash them together.
  4. Add ice.
  5. Add two shots of your favorite gin. I used Empress 1908 because a while ago they hired me to take a photo of my blueberry lavender gin smash for their social media channels. Score! But also both the flavor and color of this particular gin work really well here. If you don’t have Empress 1908 on hand you could easily use Bombay, Tanqueray or your favorite floral gin!
  6. Add a tablespoon of simple syrup and 1/4 cup (two shots) of sparkling water.
  7. Stir and enjoy!

Lavender is a lovely, if particularly strong flavor. Go easy with it at first.

I used Empress Gin to make my cocktail. The color of Empress and its floral notes do work really well here, but you can use any gin you like!
